Langkofel Group seen from the Seiser Alp. The Dolomites were formed 200 million years ago out of the coral reefs of the shallow primeval ocean. The Dolomite Alps arose as a result of the collision of the African and European tectonic plates forcing the rocks at the point of impact to soar skyward.
